Savor the Taste: Memory Journal of Family Favorite Recipes

Designed by Beth Cote
Everyone has their favorite comfort foods, from Chocolate Cake with Seven Minute Icing to Sourdough Waffles to perhaps Mom’s Meatloaf. For many of us, the whiff of turkey roasting on Thanksgiving Day evokes memories of family feasts, football games, or maybe even traveling by train or air to spend the day with loved ones. Honor your past and present by creating a scrapbook to house these time honored recipes.

Instructions

  1. Cut two 6-3/4" x 8" rectangles from the Apron Strings paper with the stripes running parallel to the long sides. Leaving a 2-1/4" margin of black linen binding as shown in the project photo, use the craft glue to adhere one Apron Strings rectangle onto each of the front and back covers of the binder, extending about 3/4" out from the top, bottom and outside edge, then wrap the edges around the sides and adhere onto the inside of each cover, trimming and cutting notches into the corners for a smooth look. Cut two 6" squares from the Honeysuckle paper and adhere one onto the inside of each of the front and back covers centered vertically and with the inner edge aligned with the wrapped inner edges of the Apron Strings paper.
  2. Use the mat board to trace and cut the shape from Red cardstock, then use the small piece of dry sponge and White to ink the edges of the Red rectangle.
  3. Pull threads from each cut end of the blue paisley ribbon to create fringe. Stack one small light blue button onto one larger light blue button and, stitching through the sets of holes in each button, use the large sewing needle and black floss to sew the stack onto one end of the ribbon centered vertically just in from the fringe as shown in the project photo. Repeat for the second set of buttons on the opposite end of the ribbon. Sew the fork and spoon charms vertically onto the ribbon with the same floss, knotting the ends on the front and referring to project photo as a placement guide. Adhere the embellished ribbon centered onto the Red inked rectangle with adhesive dots, then stitch the knife charm onto the Red rectangle between the fork and spoon, referring to project photo as a placement guide. Adhere the embellished rectangle onto the mat board even on all sides, then add tiny drops of glue to the backs of the charms as needed to help hold them in place. Adhere the embellished mat board onto the front cover centered vertically 5⁄8" in from the right side.
  4. Cut a 17" length of Summer Flowers ribbon, wrap vertically from the inside around the binding, and tie the ends into a knot on the outside of the binder. Center the knot vertically and the ribbon length horizontally on the binding and then use tiny dots of glue to help hold it in place. Trim the tails on a diagonal to measure 1". Cut a 6" length and a 12" length from the remaining Summer Flowers ribbon and position the 6" length vertically 1/8" in from the right side of the black linen margin on the front cover, then wrap the 12" length of ribbon vertically from the inside around the same black linen margin to meet the ends of the 6" piece. Tie the abutting ends together in knots on the front as shown in the project photo. Cut a 17" length of Summer Swirls ribbon, wrap around the same area 1/8" to the left of the Summer Flowers pieces, and tie the ends into a knot on the front. Trim the tails of each knot on a diagonal to measure approximately 11/4" and apply glue as required to secure. Wrap the remaining lengths of Summer Flowers and Summer Swirl ribbon vertically around the black linen margin on the back cover beginning 1/8" in from the left edge and spaced 1/8" apart, wrapping the ribbon from outside to inside. Overlap or trim the ends as appropriate on the inside to accommodate the binder rings. Apply glue along the lengths as required.
